SLEMENOVA ŠPICA ( 1911 m )

A photographer's dream on the northern side of the Julian Alps

Level: easy except for a short traverse secured with steel cables

Duration: 15 km by car from Dovje Mojstrana to Kranjska Gora and then an hour and a half from Vršič, a little less back

Total ascent: 350 m

Features along the way : The Vršič road,Sleme and small lakes

For photographers, as well as for other mountain walkers, Sleme is a true paradise. The altitude is verging on the modest, although the grassy knoll marking the start of a chain of towering mountains all the way to Mt Jalovec offers fantastic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. And the foreground has its own enchantments, too, including tiny lakes and ancient larches bordering the grassy plateau of Sleme. The mountain of Slemenova pica is a peak set back a little above the valley, and offers even more expansive views.Sleme can be approached from Kranjska Gora town along the footpath which frequently intersects the famous Vršič road, built largely during the First World War.The ascent can be toned down a little-and shortened by three hours- by starting from the Vršič pass at 1611 m.The route leads though dwarf pines to Vratca, and then cuts across the slope under the northern face of Mala Mojstrovka. The northern ridge offers an orientation, and underneath it lies the grassy expanse of Sleme and a little beyond it Slemenova špica. The route down can either go to Tamar or back to Vršič,Where rest and refreshment can be had at one of several mountain huts.
