The Julian Alps are the first mountain barrier separating the Mediterranean Sea from continental Central Europe. As a result, there is no lack of rain and snow in this region and water can be found in all its forms.Visible from the road near Bovec, the Boka waterfall gushes directly from a high cliff, spilling up to 100 cubic meters of water per second that falls for 106 meters. There are another 260 larger and smaller waterfalls of various shapes and sizes in the Slovene Alps. Our highest is the 130 meter Čedca waterfall in the mountains above Jezersko. All of this water carves its way into unimaginably narrow, dark and deep limestone canyons such as Tolminska Korita near Tolmin,Mlinarica beside the road over the Vršič mountain pass,Vintgar near Bled(see my travalogue "Vintgar gorge"),Mostnice near Lake Bohinj, and the Kamniška Bistrica valley.

The most beautiful waterfall for me is Peričnik (52m) near Mojstrana-5 km from it-half way from Mojstrana to Vrata valley-on one's right hand side is the Peričnik waterfall. A great deal of this water disappears immediately into the limestone karst underworld. The deepest abyss discovered so far is located near Bovec and is 1300 meters deep. When the water resurfaces,it unites in streams and rivers. The most renowned of Slovenia's Alpine rivers is certainly the Soča which many consider the most beautiful river in all of Europe.

Soča river
It's water shimmers with a unique emerald colour. In addition to two Alpine valley lakes, the untouched Lake Bohinj and the baroquely graceful Lake Bled, the high mountains are sprinkled with a string of tiny and picturesque lakes such as those in the Valley of Triglav Lakes which lie some 2000 meters above sea level and the scattered among the dark marshes of the Pohorje mountain range. The water, continuously purified by limestone, is clear, lively and beautiful. You need only knell down to quench your thirst.

Waterfall Peričnik - 52 m

It is very easy. Approach is possible with the car or much better by foot from the Mojstrana to direction to the Vrata valley to Aljažev dom. Path from Mojstrana along the right side of the Bistrica stream is very recommended.

One hour of relaxing walk and the lower Peričnik could be seen. Be more careful with the approach to the Upper waterfall.
